INTRODUCTION
Yura :Hi, I’m Yura, and welcome back to NorwegianClass101.com.This is Absolute Beginner Season 1, Lesson 21 - Seeing the Sights in Norway
Filip :I’m Filip. In this lesson we will look at sightseeing in Norway.
Yura :You’ll learn more intermediate question forms, and how they are structured.
Filip :The dialogue this time revolves around Mark and Espen doing some sightseeing in Oslo.
Yura :There is no unusually polite speech here. It’s fairly straightforward. So let’s listen to the conversation.

Lesson conversation

Espen - Dette er det norske slottet. Det er i fra 1849.
Mark - Er det kongens garde som står rundt?
Espen - Det stemmer.
Mark - Er det mulig å ta bilde av de?
Espen - Selvfølgelig, jeg kan ta bilde av deg ved siden av en om du vil?
Mark - Ja, gjerne!
English Host: Let’s hear the conversation one time slowly.
Espen - Dette er det norske slottet. Det er i fra 1849.
Mark - Er det kongens garde som står rundt?
Espen - Det stemmer.
Mark - Er det mulig å ta bilde av de?
Espen - Selvfølgelig, jeg kan ta bilde av deg ved siden av en om du vil?
Mark - Ja, gjerne!
English Host: Now let’s hear it with the English translation.
Espen - Dette er det norske slottet. Det er i fra 1849.
Yura - This is the Norwegian Royal Castle. It dates back to 1849.
Mark - Er det kongens garde som står rundt?
Yura - Are those the Royal Guards?
Espen - Det stemmer.
Yura - That's right.
Mark - Er det mulig å ta bilde av de?
Yura - Is it possible to take a photo of them?
Espen - Selvfølgelig, jeg kan ta bilde av deg ved siden av en om du vil?
Yura - Of course, I can take your photo next to one of them, if you want?
Mark - Ja, gjerne!
Yura - Yes, please!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yura :I haven’t done that much sightseeing in Norway actually.
Filip :Me neither, but then again I’m from Norway so it’s a bit different.
Yura :I wish I had gone and seen more of the fjords, or the aurora.
Filip :Yeah or the glaciers and mountain ranges in western Norway. There are hundreds of places with beautiful scenery that are definitely worth a visit if you go to Norway.
Yura :I’m more of a city person though. I did a lot of sightseeing in Trondheim and Bergen, and Oslo of course.
Filip :Yeah? I have never been to Trondheim nor Bergen myself, but I hear they are great cities to visit.
Yura :Bergen has a lot of culture to offer, lots of museums and attractions, plus the heritage site. In Trondheim there are also some museums and interesting historical sites, but the best part about Trondheim is the night life.
Filip :I heard they have a lot of good bars and clubs there, plus the people, who always enjoy a night out.
Yura :Yes, on the other hand I think that for those who are more interested in high culture, Oslo has a wide range of theaters and the opera, plus chamber music concerts several times a week.
Filip :Oh and my favorite is for those movie goers out there. The Colosseum is one of the largest THX cinemas in Europe and is definitely worth a visit.
Yura :Sounds fun! Let’s look at the vocab shall we?

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Yura :Let’s take a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. There are two things here that we want to explain from the vocab.
Filip :Yes, ‘er det mulig å’ is a phrase from our dialogue.
Yura :It would translate to something like “Is it possible to...” or, “am I allowed to ..”
Filip :Like in our dialogue we had ‘er det mulig å ta bilde av de?’
Yura :“Is it possible to take a photo of them?”
Filip :‘So er det mulig å’ means “Is it possible to”
Yura :Next we have another phrase in the vocab. This one is slightly easier.
Filip :‘Ved siden av’
Yura :Which means “beside”. it is a preposition, but it is sort of three words in a row.
Filip :Yeah it could translate directly to English as something like “by the side of”
Yura :Let’s hear an example of that one.
Filip :Ok, ‘Huset mitt er ved siden av sykehuset’
Yura :“My house lies beside the hospital”
Filip :‘Kan du stå ved siden av skiltet?’
Yura :“Could you stand beside the sign there?“
Filip :Great let’s move on to the grammar!

Lesson focus

Yura :In this lesson we’ll focus on intermediate questions.
Filip :We’ll look at some of the question sentences in the dialogue, break them up, and expand on them.
Yura :To start off with, we are going to look at the question...
Filip :‘Er det kongens garde som står rundt?’
Yura :Which means “Are those the royal guards?”
Filip :Now this is an assertive form question where the person who poses it would like to confirm a notion they have, or a statement they’ve made.
Yura :If you remember some of our earliest lessons, we talked about questions being VSO. Verb, subject, object.
Filip :I believe one of our first questions was an assertive one - ‘Er du Kristian?’
Yura :“Are you Kristian?” That’s a name by the way, not the religion.
Filip :The questions in this lesson are more or less the same in structure, just expanded a bit. ‘Er det kongens garde som står rundt?’ Would translate directly to English as...
Yura :“Is that the king’s guard who stands around?” (pause) That suddenly makes it a whole lot easier to understand word for word.
Filip :So let’s break it up. ‘Er det’ means “is that” and is followed by a pronoun or noun, then comes ‘som’ which means “that” and the question ends with a verb, noun pronoun, preposition, or adjective, or a mix of those.
Yura :Alright so it’s fairly complex, but let’s look at some examples.
Filip :Er det søsteren din som sitter der?
Yura :This means “Is it your sister who sits there?”
Filip :Er det en bil som lager den lyden?
Yura :“Is it a car making that sound? “
Filip :Great, one more - ‘Er det huset som du snakket om?’
Yura :“Is that the house (that) you were talking about?”
Yura :Alright, so our next question would be
Filip :Jeg kan ta bilde av deg ved siden av en om du vil?
Yura :“I can take a picture of you standing beside one if you want?” (Pause) So basically what we are after here is the ‘jeg kan’ part and ‘om du vil.’
Filip :Those two at the beginning and end of a sentence would create a “I can... if you’d like?” sentence. It’s not quite a question, but it does prompt for a yes or no reply.
Yura :Let’s look at some examples here too.
Filip :Alright. ‘Jeg kan kjøre deg til byen om du vil?’
Yura :“I can drive you to town if you want?”
Filip :Jeg kan vise deg Munch museet om du vil?
Yura :“I can show you the Munch museum if you’d like?”
Filip :And, ‘Jeg kan sjekke kartet om du vil?’
Yura :“I could check the map if you’d like?”
Filip :Great! I think that should do it for now.

Outro

Yura :Alright, I hope you learned a lot from this lesson!
Filip :Take care and see you in our next lesson!
Yura :Until then make sure to practice and have fun!
Filip :Hade bra!
Yura :Bye!
