Brandon: And welcome to Culture Class: Essential Norwegian Vocabulary, Lesson 14! In this lesson you'll learn five essential words related to geography and nature. Brandon: The western side of Norway is dominated by several long and majestic fjords. Two well-known fjords are Sognefjorden, which is the second-longest fjord in Norway, and Hardangerfjorden, which is the third-longest fjord.

Brandon: Norway has about 2,500 glaciers. The biggest one lies in western Norway and is called Jostedalsbreen. Jostedalsbreen has over 50 glacier arms.

Brandon: North of the Arctic circle or south of the Antarctic circle, the phenomenon called midnight sun occurs. This happens in the summer, when the sun doesn’t set at all. This can be seen in northern Norway, and a popular viewpoint is Nordkapp.

Brandon: Galdhø peak is Norway's highest mountain and also the highest mountain in Scandinavia and Northern Europe. To reach the top of the Galdhø Peak, you have to cross a glacier, but it is not especially complicated to climb this mountain.

Brandon: Svalbard is the most northern place in the world with a permanent population. It is an archipelago that lies between the mainland of Norway and the North Pole. Sixty percent of Svalbard consists of glaciers. Svalbard has a lot of polar bears, and people often keep their doors unlocked in case a polar bear chases someone.
