Matt: And welcome to Culture Class: Essential Norwegian Vocabulary, Lesson 21! In this lesson you'll learn five essential words related to transportation and around town. Matt: Almost every household outside the big cities owns one or two cars. It is more common to use public transportation in the big cities, so citizens of bigger cities don't typically need a car.

Matt: Buses are frequently used in the bigger cities but also in smaller places. Buses in Norway are known to be late, which is one of the things that irritates Norwegians the most. In the winter, sometimes the bus doesn’t show up at all because of traffic accidents due to the snow and ice.

Matt: T-bane literally translates as “tunnel track.” The only metro in Norway is located in Oslo and consists of six lines.

Matt: Trams can be found in cities such as Oslo, Bergen, and Trondheim. In 1875, the first tram opened in Oslo. After World War II, a lot of the trams were replaced by buses and then later, the metro.

Matt: Bicycles are very popular among people who live close to their work or school. In Norway, it is common to rent city bicycles. You pay an amount of money, and then you get a card and can go to the nearest city bicycle rack, unlock the bicycle, and park it on another rack when you are finished.
