Flam Line
The Flam Railway Line stretches from the city of Flam to the Myrdal station.
This Norwegian rail line is a major branch that links the main rail line with Sognefjord, which is the second longest fjord in the world.
The Flam Line is especially interesting because it is the steepest standard gauge railway line in all of Europe.
The Flam Line is very popular with tourists and is used almost exclusively as transportation for tourists wanting to see the spectacular views along its route.
Construction on the Flam Line started in 1924, but the line did not open until 1940 because of the engineering challenges that had to be overcome in building the line.
There had been plans to build a rail line connecting the Norwegian cities of Bergen and Oslo since 1871, and consideration of how to actually build the line began in 1893 with the first engineering surveys of the area.
Tourists who decide to take the Flam Line will be entranced by the spectacular views.
The mountain scenery provides numerous sights, like the Flam church, which was built in 1667 and still stands to this day.
There is natural beauty in the Rjoandefossen waterfall cascading down the mountainside, and a modern goat farm offers a place of serenity that many photographers frequent.
Sheer drops, hairpin turns, and evidence of avalanches along the train route remind tourists that this is not just a place of beauty, but also one that inspires fear and awe.

Building the numerous tunnels for the Flam Railway Line was very tedious work, most of which was done by hand. In total, there are about twenty tunnels along the line, and only two of them were excavated with the use of machines. It took about a month of hard labor to dig out about a meter of tunnel. The Flam Line crosses over the nearby valley and river a total of three times, and each of these crosses was done by routing the river through the tunnels below the rail line. The Flam Line was also one of the first rail lines in Norway to be adapted to handle electric trains.
