Eric: Top 25 Norwegian Questions You Need to Know ‐ Lesson 1 “What's your name?” in Norwegian (In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll encounter a common question for Norwegian learners, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.)
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “What's your name?” In Norwegian this is‐
Ida: Hva heter du?
Eric:The first word in the question is
Ida: hva
Eric: meaning “what” in English.
Ida: (Slow, by syllable) hva
Eric: Listen again and repeat.
Ida: hva
{Pause}
Eric: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation,
breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the
series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is‐
Ida: heter
Eric: meaning “are called.”
Ida: (Slow, by syllable) heter
Eric: Now repeat.
Ida: heter
{Pause}
Eric: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Ida: hva heter
{pause}
Eric: And next is
Ida: du
Eric: meaning “you.”
Ida: (Slow, by syllable) du
Eric: Now repeat.
Ida: du
{Pause}
Eric: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Ida: hva heter du
{pause}
Eric: (You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies.)
Master the following pattern and responses to the question “What's your name?”
Ida: Jeg heter Sara.
Eric: "My name is Sara.” Listen again as you hear the phrase slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Ida: (Slow) Jeg heter Sara.
{pause}
Eric: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is
Ida: jeg
Eric: meaning “I.”
Ida: (Slow, by syllable) jeg
Eric: Now repeat.
Ida: jeg
{Pause}
Eric: And next is
Ida: heter
Eric: meaning “am called.”
Ida: (Slow, by syllable) heter
Eric:Now repeat.
Ida: heter
{Pause}
Eric: Next is
Ida: Sara
Eric: which is the name “Sara.”
Ida: (Slow, by syllable) Sara
Eric:Now repeat.
Ida: Sara
{Pause}
Eric: Listen to the speaker say “My name is Sara” and then repeat.
Ida: Jeg heter Sara.
{pause}Eric: To expand on the pattern, let’s replace “Sara” with “Peter.”
Ida: Peter
Eric: “Peter”
Ida: (slow) Peter (regular) Peter
Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “Peter.”
Ida: Jeg heter Peter.
Eric: You’ll see that it’s almost the same. Simply replace “Sara” with “Peter.” Now say, “My name is Peter.”
{pause}
Ida: Jeg heter Peter.
Eric: Let’s try another and replace “Peter” with “Anne.”
Ida: Anne
Eric: “Anne”
Ida: (slow) Anne (regular) Anne
Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “Anne.”
Ida: Jeg heter Anne.
Eric: Again, it mostly stays the same. Simply replace the name “Peter” with “Anne.” Now say,
“My name is Anne.”
{pause}
Ida: Jeg heter Anne.
Eric: For more practice, replace “Anne” with “Viktor.”
Ida: Viktor
Eric: Viktor
Ida: (slow) Viktor (regular) Viktor
Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “Viktor.”
Ida: Jeg heter Viktor.
Eric: Again, all you have to do is replace the name. Now try saying “My name is Viktor.”
{pause}
Ida: Jeg heter Viktor.
Eric: Now it's time for a quiz.
Eric: Imagine you're visiting Norway and someone asks you your name. Your name is Sara.
How will you answer?
Ida: Hva heter du? (five seconds) Jeg heter Sara.
Eric: Now your name is Peter. Respond to the question again.
Ida: Hva heter du? (five seconds) Jeg heter Peter.
Eric: Imagine your name is Anne. Answer the speaker's question.
Ida: Hva heter du? (five seconds) Jeg heter Anne.
Eric: Imagine your name is Viktor. How will you respond?
Ida: Hva heter du? (five seconds) Jeg heter Viktor.
Eric: Now imagine that you want to learn that person's name. Ask the question.
(5 seconds)
Ida: Hva heter du?
{pause}
Eric: Now it's time to answer the question with your own name. Be sure to practice out
loud!
Ida: Hva heter du?
Eric: This is the end of Lesson 1.
