Hei, jeg heter Nora. Hi everybody! I’m Nora.
Welcome to NorwegianClass101.com’s “Norsk på 3 minutter”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Norwegian.
In the last lesson, we learned how to use the verb å gjøre which means "to do" in Norwegian.
In this lesson, we will learn how to use å like, a very delightful Norwegian verb, which is also the third verb in our series dedicated to the most common Norwegian verbs.
å like can mean "to like" in Norwegian, so in this lesson we are going to see how to use it correctly. Let’s go! La oss begynne!
Imagine you are in a restaurant with your friend and he or she asks you - Liker du ost?
This means "Do you like cheese?"
So supposing you like it – even though it might sound like a weird question! – you can answer Ja, jeg liker ost.
[slowly] Ja, jeg liker ost.
So let’s break down this answer.
First we had-
Ja which is simply "Yes."
Then Jeg which is "I" in Norwegian. After which we have liker, which is the present form of the verb å like.
Finally we had ost which means “cheese”.
So all together it is Ja, jeg liker ost.
You can use this verb with other verbs to express that you like performing an action. Say you like climbing. In Norwegian you would say it like Jeg liker å klatre.
[slowly] Jeg liker å klatre
Where å klatre means “to climb”. Make sure your verbs after liker are in the infinitive form with the å article in front of it.
You can use this verb about a person as well. Like in English you can say “I like you”.
And in Norwegian this would translate as, Jeg liker deg.
[slowly]Jeg liker deg
Now of course this doesn’t come close to the verb å elske “to love”, but it does show a certain affection towards the other person. It can easily be used when you are at the stage where you don’t quite want to say “I love you” just yet.
If you want to say “I love you” just change the verb å like with the verb å elske. Å Elske is the most romantic verb in Norwegian and has more or less the same usage as in English. Jeg elsker deg “I love you”, is the most romantic sentence you can say to someone.
Now it’s time for Nora’s Insights.
Now, å like is sort of bland if you want to express absolute love for an object or something. Like English, using “I love chocolate!” is a much stronger way of expressing your feelings towards chocolate. In Norwegian this would be Jeg elsker sjokolade!
[slowly]Jeg elsker sjokolade!
In this lesson, we learned how to use the verb å like depending on the degree of your love!
Next time we’ll learn another very useful verb, å komme.
Do you know what this Norwegian verb means? I’ll be waiting for you in the next Norsk på 3 minutter lesson.
På gjensyn!
