Hei, jeg heter Nora. Hi everybody! I’m Nora.
Welcome to NorwegianClass101.com’s “Norsk på 3 minutter”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Norwegian.
In the last lesson, we learned how to use the verb å komme.
We will now jump into our series dedicated to question words in Norwegian. Our first is the most commonly used one -- the word for "What."
So imagine you want to ask your friend "What are you doing?" How will you do it?
You will ask Hva driver du med?
[slowly] Hva driver du med?
So let’s break down this question.
Hva is "What" in Norwegian.
Driver is the present tense of the verb "to do".
Du as you probably are familiar with by now is “you”.
And finally the word med might be a new one, it means “with”.
So, all together it is Hva driver du med?
“What are you doing?”
As you may have noticed, we already learned this question a few lessons ago, but it was slightly different. Hva gjør du? Both questions mean exactly the same thing. In fact there are several other ways to pose the same question, but the most important thing is that all of them start with hva.
The rule is simple- in Norwegian hva will always be the first word in the sentence when asking a “what” question.
So asking someone’s name would be-
Hva heter du?
[slowly] Hva heter du?
Here hva is the first word, followed by heter which means “is called" or "is named”.
And finally du which you should know by now means “you”.
Asking “what is it" or "that” is as easy as in English. Just say
Hva er det?
[slowly]Hva er det?
Also, we can use a word we already learned to ask about peoples’ preferences.
Hva slags mat liker du?
[slowly] Hva slags mat liker du?
It means “What kind of food do you like?”
I bet you already know how to answer this! Jeg liker...and then the food!
Now it’s time for Nora’s Insights.
A heavily used phrase in Norwegian is “what’s up”. Hva skjer? Like English, the phrase is used to initiate conversation. It’s an incredibly practical phrase to have when you’re around Norwegians, so I’ll say it again.
Hva skjer?
In this lesson, we learned the Norwegian word for “what”. It’s a simple word, yet its usage is wide and you might have a hard time remembering all the different questions you can ask, but don’t worry, you just need practice!
In the next lesson, we will learn how to ask "Where" questions.
I’ll be waiting for you in the next Norsk på 3 minutter lesson.
Hade bra!
