Eric: Top 25 Norwegian Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 5 “Do you speak Norwegian?” (In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll encounter a common question for Norwegian learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.)
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “Do you speak Norwegian?” In Norwegian, this is
Ida: Snakker du norsk?
Eric: The first word in the question is
Ida: snakker
Eric: meaning “speak” in English.
Ida: (Slow, by syllable) snakker
Eric: Listen again and repeat.
Ida: snakker
{Pause}
Eric: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Ida: du
Eric: meaning “you.”
Ida: (Slow, by syllable) du
Eric: Now repeat.
Ida: du
{Pause}
Eric: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Ida: snakker du
{pause}
Eric: And next is
Ida: norsk
Eric: meaning “Norwegian.”

Eric: Now repeat.
Ida: norsk
{Pause}
Eric: Listen to the entire question and repeat.

{Pause}
Eric: And next is
Ida: jeg
Eric: meaning “I.”
Ida: (Slow, by syllable) jeg
Eric: Now repeat.
Ida: jeg
{Pause}
Eric: And next,
Ida: kan
Eric: meaning “can.”
Ida: (Slow, by syllable) kan
Eric:Now repeat.
Ida: kan
{Pause}

Ida: snakke
Eric: meaning “speak.”
Ida: (Slow, by syllable) snakke

{Pause}Eric: Listen to the speaker say “Yes, I can speak a little” and then repeat.
Ida: Ja, jeg kan snakke litt.
{pause}Eric: To use a different phrase, let’s replace “a little” with “pretty well.”
Ida: ganske bra
Eric: “pretty well”
Ida: (slow) ganske bra (regular) ganske bra
Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “pretty well.”
Ida: Ja, jeg kan snakke ganske bra.
Eric: It mostly stays the same, we just replace “a little” with “pretty well.” Now say, “Yes, I can speak pretty well.”
{pause}
Ida: Ja, jeg kan snakke ganske bra.
Eric: For more practice, replace “pretty well” with “fluently.”
Ida: flytende
Eric: “fluently”
Ida: (slow) flytende (regular) flytende
Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “fluently.”
Ida: Ja, jeg kan snakke flytende.
Eric: Again, it’s almost the same, just replace “pretty well” with “fluently.” Now say, “Yes, I can speak fluently.”
{pause}
Ida: Ja, jeg kan snakke flytende.
Eric: Now let’s replace “fluently” with “well enough.”
Ida: godt nok
Eric: “well enough”
Ida: (slow) godt nok (regular) godt nok
Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “well enough.”
Ida: Ja, jeg kan snakke godt nok.
Eric: Here, we simply replaced “fluently” with “well enough.” Now say, “Yes, I can speak well enough.”
{pause}
Ida: Ja, jeg kan snakke godt nok.
Eric: To say "no" in a simple way, just say
Ida: Nei, det gjør jeg ikke.
Eric: This is like saying “No, I don't” in English. Let's hear it slowly.
Ida: (Slowly) Nei, det gjør jeg ikke.
Eric: And one more time at normal speed.
Ida: Nei, det gjør jeg ikke.
Eric: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting Norway and someone asks you if you speak Norwegian. You want to answer that you speak a little. Respond to the question.
Ida: Snakker du norsk? (five seconds) Ja, jeg kan snakke litt.
Eric: Now you want to answer that you speak pretty well. How would you answer?
Ida: Snakker du norsk? (five seconds) Ja, jeg kan snakke ganske bra.
Eric: You want to answer that you speak fluently. Answer the speaker's question.
Ida: Snakker du norsk? (five seconds) Ja, jeg kan snakke flytende.
Eric: Now you want to answer that you speak well enough. How would you respond?
Ida: Snakker du norsk? (five seconds) Ja, jeg kan snakke godt nok.
Eric: Now you want to ask someone if they speak Norwegian. Ask the question.
(5 seconds)
Ida: Snakker du norsk?
{pause}
Eric: Now it's time to answer the question with actual information about yourself.
Ida: Snakker du norsk?
{pause}
Eric: This is the end of Lesson 5.
